Normandy D-Day Tour
If you’re staying in Paris, the best way to see Omaha Beach and get a glimpse of the D-Day Normandy Landings, is via a minibus day tour.
D-Day is June 6, 1944 — the day on which the Invasion of Normandy began — commencing the Western Allied effort to liberate mainland Europe from Nazi occupation during World War II. [Wikipedia]
An experienced and knowledgeable guide, who speaks English, will pick you up at your Paris hotel and drive you to Normandy in a deluxe air-conditioned vehicle.
The itinerary (subject to change) is something like this:
- First stop is at the “Pointe du Hoc”, 90 feet high cliffs, where a 225-strong Army Ranger Assault Group landed on the morning of D-Day. It was a German fortified strong point.
Then you will stop at Colleville sur Mer to visit the American Cemetery that overlooks Omaha Beach. There will be plenty of time to see the 9,000 white crosses and spend time at the chapel and memorial.- The next stops are other famous WWII locations, such as Arromanches and the vestiges of the artificial harbor (Mulberry Bridge), Longues-sur-Mer and the famous German artillery battery (with guns still intact), that gave the Allies a severe pounding on the morning of June 6, 1944.
- On your return to Paris, you will visit the Mémorial de Caen (Peace Museum), regarded as probably the best World War II museum in France.
Sure, you could rent a car and drive to Omaha Beach yourself, but why suffer so much traffic stress and stand a good change of getting lost while, instead, you could be relaxing in air-conditioned luxury and enjoy both the trip and the day!
