Anybody Know Anything About A Very Very Old Normandy Clarinet?
I have a very old Normandy clarinet (serial number 10XX) made in France in a Noblet case. I really don’t know much about it but it plays well and has been a very solid instrument with good tone. Anybody know any history or info about it? Even the approximate age……???

Your clarinet was made by Normandy before Normandy was purchased by Leblanc in 1978. Leblanc still produces Normandies today. There are quite a few serial number lists online for a Normandy going back to 1964, but few records exist before that.
They are student grade clarinets. If yours is French made I suspect it’s wood. My clarinet is a Normandy made in 1964 in France. I use it several times a week. It is a very decent clarinet that has given me well over 20 years of faithful service.
Unfortunately, a lot of others will tell you that anything not made by Buffet is junk, but that’s untrue. Look across the answer boards and you’ll see many questions from parents of 11 year-olds who are buying Buffet R13′s for their kids in the belief that an 11-year-old NEEDS a $3,000 clarinet. Unbelievable. Don’t get me wrong — Buffets are fine instruments for those who intend to make their living by playing clarinet. For the other 99 percent of us, though, old Normandies are just fine.
I hope your old Normandy gives you as much pleasure as mine has given me.
