And why should you think that French nationalism is a ‘monster’? The war between France and England was very complicated (the kings of both nations were related by blood and there were conflicting claims to the throne).

A dynastic marriage between the English king and the former queen of France. Brittany was also to France what Scotland and Wales were to England, the English monarchy seized the opportuity to use local antagonizisms against the French.
Oh, no one is speaking modern French yet, and both the English and French nobility spoke the same langauge. This added further seperation between nobility and peasentry. The English kingship originated with William the Bastard, er.. the Conquerer, a Norman noble.
