getting from calais to normandy?

Normandy D-Day Tour

travelling to france in august. would like advice on taking tube to dover from heathrow. how easy is that? how expensive? then we plan on spending a night in dover… are there any decent places i could take three kids for a night? we then plan on taking the ferry the next day into calais and renting a car… does anyone know of a car rental place that’s reliable??? or is the train/bus a regular reliable/cheaper thing…? then taking the car, train or bus into normandy… do i have to book the ferry in advance? i can’t see that, with so many crossings a day… or, do i need to book a car rental in advance? etc…

if you can help with any or all of these questions i’d greatly appreciate it…

Hi there

This is quite a journey but if you break it down it should be pretty straightforward. The tube is only available in central London and therefore you will need to chose another form of transport to get to Dover and beyond. Here’s what I would do:

HEATHROW – CALAIS
Step 1: TUBE: Piccadilly Line (Eastbound) to St Pancras Railway Station (no changes required).
1 HOUR

Step 2: EUROSTAR: Train to Calais Fretun (no fuss with switching from train to ferry etc) and Dover is not so nice nowadays so not worth staying the night
1 HOUR

So within a few hours you could be in France – allow an hour to check in and make sure you pre book the train try: http://www.directrail.com/eurostar.aspx

There are plenty of car hire options at Calais eg AVIS and again worth booking in advance and then the world is your oyster. Normandy is about two to three hours away but August is busy both in England and in France so always worth booking everthing beforehand (especially hotels).

Normandy is superb, great beaches and stunning history, you must visit Caen and its war museum to at least pay tribute to those who gave their lives for our freedom today.

Buon voyage
Ben
