An elderly friend of mine wants to know about an american parashutist that landed on the spire of a church and was spared by the Germans during the war. Does anyone have any information on this or a link i could find out for him Many thanks – need to know the name of the church and his name if possible.

Video of the monument to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion at Varaville in Normandy France. The men of 1 Can Para parachuted into France at midnight on June 6, 1944 and gathered at Varaville to repel a German counterattack against the landing at Sword Beach later that day. Historical site and museum at the Merville Battery in Normandy France. This was the site of a major battle as a vastly undermanned unit of British paras attacked the battery to take it out of commission during the D-Day invasion.
