The Road to Freedom – Normandy France

The Freedom Highway starts in Ste Mere Eglise, France. It is the first town liberated by the Allies in WWII during Operation Overlord. I rode my bicycle from one end of Normandy to the other on June 6, 2004, the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. I started at (Utah Beach) and rode to Caen (Sword Beach). Several years later I visited the WWII Museum in New Orleans and found the Freedom Hwy Marker No. 1 tha…

Some great WWII D-Day locations?

I know alot about WWII and I was thinking of one day visiting Normandy, France and I need to know if the bunkers on one of the beaches (Omaha, Sword, Juno, Gold, and Utah) are still there and if there are tours or some kind of special thing where you can go in the bunkers and walk on the beaches and stuff like that.

And so if there are any websites or anything you can show and/or tell me about that would be great. Also if there are any pictures or videos anyone can show me that would also be appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. If you know any other great WWII locations I can visit please tell me! I know about a lot of them but I’m sure there are a few I don’t know about! Thanks!

Does Anyone Remember It Is The Anniversary Of D-day (normandy Invasion) Or Thanked A Wwii Veteran Today?

My uncle was19 yrs old when he landed on a beach in Normandy, France June 6, 1944. He faced scaling a cliff with Germans atop shooting at him & behind him, a rising tide full of dead bodies. Weeks later his family was advised he was “missing in action”.They were worried sick. His mom died 11 months later,at age 45, not knowing if her son was dead or alive. He survived. He had been hit, but evacuated to England. He always regretted missing his mother’s funeral. He came home, got on with his life & didn’t mention the war. Pieces of shrapnel remained in his body. The D-Day invasion was instrumental to liberating Europe from German Nazi rule. If Hitler weren’t stopped, what would our world be like now? The WWII vets, so young then, are old now & dying at a tremendous rate. Take time to gently shake an old man’s hand & say “thanks” while you still can-most men in their 80′s or older served in WWII-they may be shy &embarrased by the attention, but will appreciate it more than you can know.

Omaha Beach, Then & Now

been interested in the story of D-Day & Operation Overlord. It was in 2006 that our family holiday took us to Normandy, France and I could not pass up the chance to visit the area that was supposed to resemble the little part of Devon that is Slapton Sands. With humble recognition to Steven Spielberg and the fantastic music of John Williams this is my tribute to those that paid the ultimate price…

Merville Battery Museum Normandy France WWII D-Day

Historical site and museum at the Merville Battery in Normandy France. This was the site of a major battle as a vastly undermanned unit of British paras attacked the battery to take it out of commission during the D-Day invasion. Otherwise the large guns would have pummelled the British landing at Sword Beach not far away. Protected on the flank by Canadian paras, the British heroically succeeded…
