Hi there
All commonweath troops fought in both world wars and should have been equally acknowledged.
This is a small story of the second world war. An English woman was among the prisoners held by the Japanese, a Sikh prisoner removed the sacred comb from his hair and shared it with the woman prisoner and with others.
A small token, perhaps, but deeply moving.
Best wishes.

At that time India was ruled by the British Empire. After it gained independence, no one really associates India with Britain, and their help becomes largely forgotten.
If it helps, it is basically the Queen of the Commonwealth Realms who tends to act as a symbol to all those people who lost their lives whilst fighting for the Empire. The only reason Canada gets a seperate mention is because they contributed so many troops compared to the rest of the Commonwealth.
I’m British by the way, I fully recognise the contribution that the Indians, Africans, and other such Commonwealth countries did whilst under the command of the British. If the support of the Gurkha’s in this country have shown anything it is that the British never forget. It is largely Sarkozy at the moment who is turning this into a Franco-American ceremony – it seems it is getting hard for even the British to get a mention unless we fight for it. God bless Obama for getting the prince to go huh.

I don’t think people in general are racist it’s just that so little modern history appears to be taught in school people just don’t know that Indian Forces fought not only in Burma and that area but also in Europe. In W.W.1 the Indian soldiers made a big contribution. I don’t believe however that you had the highest casualty rate among the Allies but I won’t argue the point with you.
I am ashamed that some of the Answers to your question are so ignorant both in fact and content.

I wont even begin to argue how wrong you are about india losing most people- that is so wrong. China lost most by far, but anyway Indian soldiers had little to do with d day landings plus i actually did watch a doc on d day ad minority groups were in fact mentioned

No Gurkhas landed at Normandy. They have been roundly and deservedly congratulated and honored for their contributions to the War effort, but today was about the forces that landed on the beaches of France.

Get over it. The role of India in WWII was so small, it not even mentioned in the history books.
